Speaking as someone who skipped school to attend the first matinee showing of All the President's Men in 1976, I'm raising a glass tonight to W. Mark Felt, who today was identified as the "Deep Throat" source of Watergate fame.
Felt, 91, now lives in California. But he is a native of Twin Falls, Idaho, and a 1935 graduate of the University of Idaho. Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein had pledged to keep Deep Throat's identity a secret until after his death, but a story posted today on Vanity Fair's website elicited confirmations both from Felt's family and from the Post. It seems somehow fitting that the story has come out now, during this time of national debate over the use (and occasional misuse) of anonymous sources.
