Larry Grant makes it official
Former Micron exec Larry Grant made it official today: He's running for Idaho's 1st congressional district seat. “I’ve spent the summer traveling around the district talking to people about what they expect from their congressman,” Grant said in his announcement. “Jobs, education, taxes and health care are what people want addressed. Instead they have to worry about war, debt and high gasoline prices.”
With his strong business background and fiscally conservative views, Grant will give Idaho Dems a real shot at capturing the open seat next year. I heard him speak at the Ada County Democrats' monthly meeting a few weeks ago and was impressed with his pragmatic and progressive views on issues ranging from Iraq (for which he outlined a four-step plan to help end the war) to trade. ("Free trade is good but the object should be to raise standards elsewhere, not lower our own.") "Frankly, this country deserves better than it's getting," Grant told us that night. See his website here. As the presumptive Dem nominee, Grant will face the winner of what promises to be a bruising GOP primary, with six candidates so far.
UPDATE 9/2/2005: Wait, it looks like there will be a Dem primary after all ... Cecil Kelly of Coeur d’Alene announced he’s running, too. Here’s more from the AP.

That would certainly be a coup! Hackett came close in an Ohio District which Republicans carried in 2004 by a slightly wider margin than Otter did, so it's not impossible. Good luck from your Western neighbor!
