Item from the AP: The Republican-controlled Senate easily defeated a Democratic effort Tuesday to pressure President Bush to outline a timetable for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. It then overwhelmingly endorsed a weaker statement calling on the administration to explain its Iraq policy.
Nice try, Dems. The problem with the much weaker GOP strategy is that Bush seems categorically incapable of explaining his Iraq policy. He keeps trying; we're not buying it, especially given the web of deception and ever-changing rationales that wove the case for war. At least, the Senate is now asking for regular progress reports, so perhaps - perhaps - the administration will have to move beyond the platitudes it's been slinging for the past two-and-a-half years.
Also, thanks to A.K. for alerting me to "Iraq on the Record," a searchable database of 237 specific misleading statements made by the Bush administration about why we went to war. Knowledge is power, and there's a heap of it here.
