I'm going to blog more or less live tonight .... 6:42 p.m. Mountain ... Al Sharpton is winding up his rousing speech right now, telling about Ray Charles and how he believed in an "America the Beautiful," even though he couldn't see it. People are clasping hands aloft and swaying, and damn if I'm not getting goosebumps just watching it on TV here in Idaho.
6:47 p.m. Mountain ... Bob Graham is up now, talking about how it's been more than 1,000 days since terrorists attacked us on 9/11. "One thousand days after Pearl Harbor, America was rolling to victory in WWII ... in the same amount of time in this war on terror, we have not yet secured the beachhead. John Kerry and John Edwards will." 6:52: "And friends, we know it was not Iraq who attacked the United States on 9/11. It was Osama been Forgotten and Al Qaeda." 6:54 "This is a war that demands new resources and new ideas (and most of all) new leadership." The Floridians are on their feet with "Thank you, Bob" signs. Janet Reno was among the first to get up!
7:03 p.m. Mountain ... Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell is railing against U.S. reliance on foreign oil. "We must declare our independence again - our energy independence." He is citing Kerry's plans to reduce U.S. demand for foreign oil via a "clean coal economy," American hybrid car production and tax credits, alternative energy sources, and more.
7:07 p.m. Mountain ... John Mellencamp is onstage singing "Small Town," with flags waving all around. Was that just Rosie O'Donnell giving him the thumb's up?
7:11 p.m. ... New Mexico governor and convention chair Bill Richardson, speaking both in Spanish and English, is telling how throughout history, America's foreign policy is most effective when our president is respected in the world. He says right now as measured in tanks and ships, we've never been stronger - but measured by our standing in the world, our strength is at an all-time low.
7:24 ... Sly line from Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm about how men sometimes have a hard time asking for directions, but that if a driver on the wrong track refuses to ask for directions, it's time for a new driver.
I'll blog more later, after Edwards speaks.
