Liz Paul of the Idaho Peace Coalition made these remarks today after George W. Bush's speech to military families at the Idaho Center:
“President Bush’s speech this morning in Nampa was full of hate and fear. His numerous references to the terrible tragedy of September 11, 2001 were fearmongering.
"No matter what the President says, we will never win the war on terrorism. No matter how many terrorists we kill, we will never defeat terror.
"Today it is the U.S. Armed Forces that are having a difficult time attracting recruits, not the insurgents in Iraq.
"We agree that our job in Iraq is not finished. But the role of our military forces is finished; the provocation they create overshadows the benefits they provide.
"Our nation must reject aggression and war and adopt a winning strategy of diplomacy and cooperation. Only then will Iraq enjoy true freedom.”
I was on the protest line for about two-and-a-half hours this morning, and I listened to Bush's speech on radio and TV afterward. I'll post some thoughts of my own later today.
What twisted logic: with no W.M.D., no link to 9/11 and no democracy, now we have to keep killing people and have our kids killed because so many of our kids have been killed already? Talk about a vicious circle: the killing keeps justifying itself
