The Washington Post is reporting today how, as his investigation winds down, special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald is zooming in on what Veep Cheney's office knew of the Valerie Plame leak, and when they knew it. "The prosecutor has assembled evidence that suggests Cheney's long-standing tensions with the CIA contributed to the unmasking of operative Valerie Plame," reporters Jim VandeHei and Walter Pincus wrote in their Page 1 story.
Here's more: "It is not clear whether Fitzgerald plans to charge anyone inside the Bush administration with a crime. But with the case reaching a climax -- administration officials are braced for possible indictments as early as this week-- it is increasingly clear that Cheney and his aides have been deeply enmeshed in events surrounding the Plame affair from the outset."
Read it all here. Also of note to readers within driving range of Pocatello, Idaho: Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, will be at Idaho State University a week from tonight to talk about his new book, The Politics of Truth: Inside the Lies That Led to War and Betrayed My Wife's CIA Identity. There's more info at 43rd State Blues.
You know, as someone who grew up during Watergate, it just astounds me Bush and Cheney have survived this long without more widespread calls for their impeachment. Nixon's role in Watergate was small spuds compared to this - and Monicagate? Don't make me laugh!
