John Murtha is a decorated Vietnam veteran, 37-year member of the Marine Corps, and a longtime congressman from Central Pennsylvania. He's not the sort to "cut and run." But Murtha today shook Washington with a demand for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion," said Murtha, who voted for the war.
Murtha added that we've done what we intended to do: remove Saddam Hussein. But beyond that, he said, the misson has been a downward-spiraling failure and that it's time for the Iraqis to take over - for their own safety and that of U.S. troops.
