United Vision for Idaho has named 13 community leaders and activists from around the state to honor at its eighth annual Progressive Celebration & Awards dinner next Wednesday (January 11) at the Doubletree Riverside Hotel in Boise. Lifetime Achievement awards will go to Jim Kerns of Boise, former president of the AFL-CIO and former industrial commissioner, and Beatrice Brailsford of Pocatello, for 18 years of work with the Snake River Alliance.
Other honorees include Andrea Wassner of the AFL-CIO for her work to stop Social Security privatization; state Superintendent of Public Education Marilyn Howard for standing up for strong education funding despite opposition from the state legislature and state education board; Ester Ceja, Will Buhler, and Carol Sperry for organizing opposition to the Department of Energy's plans to consolidate plutonium-238 production in Idaho; and Cece Connors of the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute in Moscow.
Awards also will go to Barry Rosenberg of Priest Lake, for his work with the Kootenai Environmental Alliance; Ferqan Mehmood of the Islamic Center of Boise and The Interfaith Alliance; Padre Jesus de Jose Camacho of St. Mary's Parish in Boise; Amy Herzfeld of the Idaho Human Rights Education Center; and Bobby Gaytan of Boise for his work with the Hispanic Cultural Center in Nampa.
Tickets for next week's dinner can be reserved by calling 331-7028 or online at the UVI website. The event will start with a social hour at 5:30, followed by dinner at 6:30 and the awards at 7. Suggested donation is $30 apiece.
