Here's one for the "things-I've-learned-while-looking-up-something-else" department:
Sen. Larry Craig teamed with Paul Shaffer - yes, Dave Letterman's bandleader - at a McLean, Va.,
house party last November to sing the praises of the then-just-nominated Samuel Alito. The Hill newspaper reported how the pair hastily put together some entertainment for a Congressional Coalition on Adoption fundraiser - a song sung to the tune of West Side Story's "Maria." This didn't make the Idaho papers, as best I can recall:
“The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard/Alito, Alito/Alito, I just
met a judge named Alito/And suddenly the name will never be the
same/Alito, Bush just picked a judge named Alito/Alito, say it proud,
that Republican saying/Say it soft and there’s Democrats praying/Alito,
may the Senate confirm Alito.”
Oy vey. Does Stephen Sondheim know about this? Read more here, if you can stand it.
Speaking of Alito, I did my sacred duty as a citizen and wrote both Craig and Sen. Mike Crapo yesterday to express my opinion that Alito should not be confirmed because he supports unfettered presidential power. I was naive enough to think that might work on Craig, who recently nixed reauthorization of the Patriot Act on similar grounds. Yeah right.
