The 1st Congressional District challenger and national netroots pick has this letter in today's Idaho Statesman:
The 2006 race for Idaho's 1st Congressional District was certainly one for the record books and I would like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who voted for me and worked so hard on the election.
But the election is over and now it is up to Mr. Sali to prove that he is up to the task. In a recent press interview, however, he said he didn't think there was much he could work on with the Democratic majority. So much for bipartisanship. As if the war in Iraq, deficit spending, illegal immigration and corruption in our government are not worthy of his efforts.
Mr. Sali also indicated that he did not expect to get much done in his first term. While Idaho needs money for schools, highways and economic development, it sounds like all Mr. Sali intends to do is sit back and complain about what the new majority in Congress is doing to clean up the mess that the old Congress left behind.
That won't be enough. Voters in Idaho will be looking for leadership, and if not leadership, at least responsible representation. If they don't see it, maybe they will change their minds next election.
Also of note, Bill Sali is already showing up on a list of the 50 most endangered GOP House members for 2008. He's #48, but he's on there.
